Keep It Clean

How do you know if your makeup artist cares about hygiene?

My friends call me a germaphobe, so clearly this is a subject that I have always cared about.

As a hairstylist and makeup artist, I often work with other makeup artists, and the one thing I cannot believe is that two years into a pandemic, there are still makeup artists out there who are not careful about hygiene. Hygiene was always important, but I thought COVID would serve as a wakeup call! They are simply not working in a safe and sanitary manner.  Keeping my clients safe is of utmost importance to me, and I’m sure it’s equally important to you, as a client. Here are some tips on how to tell if your makeup artist is taking appropriate precautions!

Of course you want to look beautiful, but a professional artist not only knows how to apply makeup, she also keeps her kit clean and sanitary for every client.

Here is what you should look for:

• Clean makeup brushes, sponges and beauty blenders
• Disposable lip wands, mascara wands, q-tips, cotton pads and sponges
• Clean spatula and palette
• 70% alcohol or the equivalent and cotton pads or tissues to wipe down metal objects like lash curlers, palettes etc. between every client
• Disinfecting wipes to clean their workspace

Makeup artists should also wash their hands, or at the very least use hand sanitizer before they begin working on each client.

Any cream product, including lipsticks shouldn’t be used directly on a client. A clean spatula or a similar tool should be used to scrape the product before each use.

Lip and eye pencils should be sharpened and sprayed with a product that contains 70% alcohol.

I disinfect tools like eyelash curlers and spatulas between each client.  If any instrument falls on the floor, it is retrieved and properly disinfected before being used. Your makeup artists should be doing these things as well.

Don’t be afraid to speak up if you feel like the conditions are less than favorable! Your health and safety is more important than anything else.
